Thursday June 1st
FUNDING MY FUTURE In-Class activity...Today we will focus on "Funding Your Future" - a.k.a scholarships and financial aid. Your participation grade is three parts . . .
I. Complete "The FAFSA (financial aid application) in 7 easy steps" TEDed lesson
II. Go to The College Board's BigFuture website. Watch any five (5) videos of your choice and for each write down the following:
1. Title of video
2. Person Featured
3. Person's title/job/role
4. Length of video (time)
5. One sentence summary of its content.
III. Now that you've watched your FAFSA and BigFuture videos, and discussed with some peers, it's time to begin your own scholarship search! Here are the scholarship sources Ms. Bard recommends; use these links to complete part two (this worksheet) of your "Flip This!" activity:
1. Florida Trend's NEXT Magazine - the was given to you by your counselor and the tangible copy of the magazine is available in guidance. This magazine is distributed to high school students in Florida for the purposes of "life after high school" planning.
2. UniGo's Scholarship Experts - On this site you can either search scholarships by type, or sign up for free and conduct a search specific to your accomplishments, background, interests, etc.
3. FinAid - this site was started as a public service in 1994 and is known to be one of the best comprehensive scholarship searches. If you're looking for unique and unusual scholarships, this is the place to go!
4. College Board's BigFuture Search - Here you create a profile based on your personal and academic information and get a list of scholarships that your are eligible for.
5. Bright Futures - Florida's state "scholarship" program offers different levels of tuition assistance if you meet the requirements.
***In addition to these, Ms. Gitten is the BRACE advisor here at JPT; you should give her your email so that she can send you updated BRACE scholarship bulletins and other relevant information.
Tuesday May 30th
Here are the essay topics for the specific Florida colleges and universities for the class of 2017; if your school doesn't require an essay, you are still required to choose a topic for this class assignment, as many scholarships will also require the essay. On Thursday, you will each meet with me to discuss your essay.
Thursday May 25th
Today you received a copy of the “post-secondary portfolio” packet and we briefly covered the “where am I going section”. Before the next class, you will need to choose a post-secondary application to complete. Choose ONE of the following (or find a printable copy of another if your school of choice is not listed here), PRINT, and complete - this is due Tuesday the 30th.

Obtain definitions for the Elements of Fictional Literature on this list; you may already know many of them You can watch this short video, look at this prezi , view this power point, consult this website, and/or consult any other sources you choose - take notes - you will be able to use them on Friday's activities and turn them in for credit.
2. Take the Elements of Fictional Literature Quiz on quia - one you log in you will have 20 minutes to complete the quiz.
Tuesday May 9th
After taking your first quiz on your independent reading, you completed independent novel investigation activities-see me if you were absent and need a copy of this.
Friday May 5th
Today you worked in pairs to complete "Life After High School: Part 2", using this matrix, map, and list.
Monday May 1st
To prepare for this week's "Flip This!" lesson, you are to complete "Life After High School: Part 1"; open this pdf of the assignment and click on the links rather than type each (lengthy) URL. Make sure you read the directions fully and complete each step - it should be completed and turned in upon your arrival to class on Friday May 5th.

Now that we've completed our reading of The Crucible , we are watching the 1996 film; we will finish the movie on Monday May 1st and I will collect your study guides at that time.

2. Complete an entire practice of the assigned (The Crucible) Act 2 word list on vocab.com.
3. Read the assigned article on NewsELA.com and complete BOTH the quiz and write components.

The first "Tech Tuesday" for this quarter is as follows:
1. Complete an entire practice of the assigned word list from Act I of The Crucible on vocab.com
2. Complete "Parallel Structure Practice" on NoRedInk.
Today you were assigned The Crucible pre-reading research project. It is due on Monday April 3rd; please follow the directions on the rubric page and attach that page to your work when you turn it in.
Thursday March 23rd
Remember..."The Socratic Smackdown" is the first grade of 4th quarter and it will take place on Thursday March 30th. Here are the handouts given in class last week, as well as two videos that may help you better prepare for it: this video will give you a better idea of what exactly a Socratic Seminar is, the correct ways to phrase your ideas, and the classroom layout. This one is an actual "smackdown" from a high school English class that has just read a novel. Don't forget-teams who are all wearing shirts of their team color will receive an automatic 5 pts. If you are not in class to help your team the day of the event, you will be given a make-up assignment. Here are the readings and discussion items that you will encounter on March 28th, when the "Smackdown" occurs:
